Our Building: A Journey Through Time
Our historic building, Souter’s Corner, has been a vibrant part of Gulgong for over 130 years. From its early days as Barnes’ Mudgee Drug Store in the 1870s, through roles as a bookshop, chemist, mayor’s office, electrical sales, bank, solicitor’s office, florist, gift shop, café, and more, it has served the community in countless ways.
This page showcases the building across different time periods, highlighting its rich history and the many lives it has touched. Through photos and stories, you can explore the evolution of Souter’s Corner and the legacy it carries into the present — now home to Intuition Music School and our curated shop of organic, handcrafted, and local treasures.

Around 1880 – A. McCulloch,
Bookseller, Stationer & Tobacconist
By the late 1870s, the building had become McCulloch’s. This early chapter of the building’s history shows it as a hub for books, stationery, and tobacco — a place where townsfolk could gather supplies and reading material in the heart of Gulgong. Locally, it was even referred to as McCulloch’s Corner before later becoming Souter’s Corner.

1910 – A.E. Souter, Gulgong Pharmacy
In 1910, the current brick building was completed, replacing the original wooden structure and creating the landmark we know today as Souter’s Corner. Built by Matt Bennett for Albert Edward (A.E.) Souter, the pharmacy continued the family’s long-standing presence in the town, serving the community for generations. A.E. Souter also served as Mayor of Gulgong, further cementing the corner’s reputation as both a local hub and a historic fixture in the heart of the community.
